Karuppur Kalamkari

Kalamkari, an ancient Indian art form with over 5,000 years of history, varies across regions. Unlike the Srikalahasthi and Machilipatnam styles of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu’s Karuppur Kalamkari is notable for its eco-friendly approach. Using natural colors from minerals and plants, artisans paint intricate designs by hand on cotton treated with milk and rice starch, employing bamboo and palm brushes for precision.

About the Organization

Lakshmi Narayan and his team of fifteen women artisans are working hard to keep the Kalamkari art form alive. His family has been practicing the craft over 1000 years and he currently operated from his workshop in Sickalnayankanpet near Thanjavur.
